North Carolina Teacher Says Student Behavior Forced Her To Walk Out Just 37 Days Into the School Year: ‘It’s Ridiculous This Year’

This teacher has already hit her limit.

There are some days on the job that are simply better than others. Whether it’s a personal issue, things seem to be going wrong, or those around you put you into a bad mood. However, one teacher in North Carolina is speaking out about how difficult her job has been less than two months after the start of the new school year, and it’s quite alarming.

Teachers are some of the most underappreciated people when it comes to professions. Sure, not all of them are the best, but the good ones go above and beyond to help their students learn and give them a safe space for the hours that they’re at school. Unfortunately, the students don’t always return the favor.

Teacher Says Her Students Are Out of Control

One North Carolina teacher says that her first few weeks of school have been awful, and that the students are out of control. The video, posted to her TikTok account @legancarl, reveals just how bad things have gotten in some districts around the country.

“37 days into our school year and I walked out,” she starts off the video. “It is ridiculous this year. This is insanity. Children are not listening. Walking out of class on their own, talking while I am talking, and I am not the only teacher experiencing this,” she continues.

The teacher says she’s not sure what’s going on with the students at her school this year, but claims that it could be bad parenting by their guardians at home. She also wondered if “every kid on the planet has ADHD.” She also wondered if a planet was out of alignment, because what she’s seeing “makes zero sense.”

The North Carolina educator asks for insight from anyone who may know what’s going on with the youth she’s been seeing at school, and she makes no qualms about the fact that she’s tired of it. Sadly, it’s awfully early into the year for teachers to be at their wit’s end.

Are The Parents To Blame?

@legancarl

This #school year is INSANE!!!!! I have 30-year teachers telling me they’ve “never seen anything like it.” My god people. What the ACTUAL FUCK are we doing?! Who is raising (or not raising) these kids?! To make it worse, I have 40 of the 70 FAILING FOR NOT DOING THE WORK. They’re sleeping, skipping, getting suspended, leaving early, goofing off, straight up not doing the work, making up excuses, arguing with each other, losing materials, showing up late, if they show up at all. I could go on! This CANNOT SUSTAIN for another 143 days. We will go insane. EDIT: To clarify, I’m going back Tuesday. I just had to leave that day. I’m apparently a masochist because I switched to this career. It’s the most rewarding while being the most taxing. #education #teacher #middleschool #fyp

“They need cameras in the classroom so parents can look at their kids!” one viewer said in the comment section. “The world’s on fire and they expect kids to act normal,” one comment read. “It’s so awful and frustrating and I’m exhausted,” another teacher commented. “Admin needs to put the hammer down. This is nuts,” a fourth person wrote.

To make matters even worse, the teacher says that more than half of her students are failing her classes simply because they’re not doing the work. “They’re sleeping, skipping, getting suspended, leaving early, goofing off, straight up not doing the work, making up excuses, arguing with each other, losing materials, showing up late, if they show up at all. I could go on!” she wrote in the caption of the video.

The educator says that she doesn’t think she can make it another 140 plus days if something doesn’t change. Could it be that parents aren’t properly ensuring that their kids are doing what they need to stay above water? Are the parents too busy with work and worries in today’s economy?

Whatever it is, the teacher isn’t ready to give up just yet. She admitted that she would be going back to school after walking out. However, that day she simply needed a break. She also went on to say that her teaching career has been something that fulfills her, but also challenges her. “I’m apparently a masochist because I switched to this career. It’s the most rewarding while being the most taxing,” she confessed.

Are Other Teachers Feeling This Way?

Sadly, this teacher isn’t alone in her feelings. In a follow-up video, she says that so many teachers have reached out saying that they are dealing with very similar situations in their own school districts.

According to a 2025 RAND’s American teacher survey, 53% of K-12 teachers say they’ve felt burned out, with many working nearly 50 hours per week. In addition, research shows that teachers are about twice as likely to experience job-related stress.

For now, the North Carolina teacher is heading back to the classroom, but her message to parents, students, and fellow teachers alike is clear: something has to give.
