A New Jersey man thought he was capturing the aftermath of a minor car accident. However, things quickly took an unexpected turn when the first responders arriving at the scene appeared to get into a little trouble of their own.
The TikTok video, posted by account @caught.slippintv, starts off with the man arriving too late to see the accident take place. However, he was able to get most of the aftermath on camera. Viewers can then see a New Jersey police cruiser that had run off the road and slammed into a nearby guardrail.
New Jersey Police And Ambulance Get Into Bizarre Crash At Accident Scene
The man recording can then be heard yelling, “Bro, you can’t park there, gang!” as the officer pokes his head out of the car. The TikTok then cuts to the man talking to one of the other responding officers, and he jokingly tells him that the man who crashed his car needs a field sobriety test.
Although the initial damage to the New Jersey police cruiser isn’t too bad, things are about to take a turn for the worse. After another cut in the clip, an ambulance can be seen pulling up to the scene of the accident, which is pretty standard procedure for any kind of emergency. The ambulance driver can then be seen attempting to get around one of the responding police cars, the ambulance sideswipes the cruiser., making for a second accident at the scene.
As the TikTok video goes on, the New Jersey man continues his hooting and hollering as he is laughing in what appears to be disbelief at what is going on in front of him. The person driving the ambulance tries to pull forward more, but it is too tight a space. They have to reverse back out and take it at a new angle. The clip comes to an end with the TikToker inspecting the damage.
“Everybody Needs A Field Sobriety Test”
The TikTok comment section couldn’t believe what they had watched. Many users hurried to leave behind their own thoughts and jokes regarding the strange situation.
“Are these the last responders?” asked one. “Everybody needs a field sobriety test,” joked another. A third person wrote, “Well, it’s time to call that fire department.” Finally, one last comment read, “They must have had a party before work!”
When Emergency Vehicles Collide
While it may seem like something out of the ordinary to see emergency vehicles colliding with one another, these accidents do tend to happen. One TikTok clip out of North Carolina shows two police officers crashing their vehicles into one another.
A second video shared on the social media platform showed the aftermath of a police vehicle and an ambulance crashing into each other. However, in this clip, the collision was so intense that the police car went flying and landed on its side.
Emergency vehicles are supposed to be the ones arriving when something goes wrong, which is probably why the TikTok left so many viewers stunned. Police, fire and EMS crews also have different responsibilities when they arrive at a crash.
Law enforcement may be focused on securing the scene and controlling traffic, while fire and rescue personnel may be dealing with hazards or helping people trapped in damaged vehicles. EMS crews, meanwhile, are responsible for assessing and treating injured people and arranging transportation when necessary.
Why Can Crash Scenes Become So Chaotic?
A crash scene can quickly become complicated when multiple emergency vehicles, damaged cars, traffic and first responders are all trying to operate in the same limited space. Police officers may need to block traffic or position their vehicles around the crash, while paramedics need enough room to safely reach and treat anyone who may be injured.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) says traffic incidents can create additional risks for responders and motorists, which is why agencies use coordinated traffic incident management strategies to help manage crash scenes and keep everyone as safe as possible.
When several emergency vehicles arrive at once, responders also have to navigate around vehicles that may be stopped at unusual angles or blocking portions of the roadway. What looks like plenty of room from a distance can quickly become a tight space for a large ambulance or other emergency vehicle to maneuver.
That doesn’t necessarily explain every detail of the unusual scene captured in this TikTok, but it does help put the chaotic situation into perspective. What started as one seemingly minor crash quickly turned into a bizarre chain reaction involving multiple first responders and one very entertained New Jersey man who happened to have his camera rolling.
