Texas Room Mom’s Halloween Costume Demand Has Parents Fuming: ‘This Is Why I’m Not Friends With People’

A Texas room mom’s request sparks backlash and laughs online

Most parents know that dealing with the constant hustle and bustle of homework, theme days, and their kids’ classmates can be overwhelming at times. However, one mother from Texas was so taken aback by her child’s classroom mom that she just had to share messages from their group chat on TikTok.

In the video, posted by @mimi.jams, the mother turned the text messages into a song, making it hard not to laugh. However, the subject matter is enough to leave other parents fuming. In the clip, it’s revealed that the class mom reached out to the other mothers to ask what their children were dressing as for Halloween.

Texas Room Mom Angers Fellow Parents With Halloween Costume Comments

The class mom asked for photos of the other kids’ costumes before the class Halloween party. Of course, some of the other moms were confused, asking why she would want or care what the other students were dressing as. The class mom, named Shelbey, then told the group that she was “trying to avoid duplicates.”

Shelbey went on to reveal that her daughter has been planning to dress as Elsa from Frozen for months, and she didn’t want another girl to show up in the same costume. That’s when another mother, named Kim, chimed in to reveal that her daughter also planned to dress as Elsa.

That’s when Shelbey asked if Kim’s daughter could change her costume, and maybe be Olaf instead, insisting that it would make for some cute pictures. However, Kim didn’t back down, revealing that her daughter’s costume wouldn’t change.

Class mom Shelbey then stated that she thought it was “unfair” for her daughter to have planned the costume for months all for another child to dress in the same costume. That’s when a third mother named Cassidy stepped into the chat.

“Shelbey, they are in the first grade…they can all be Elsa. Who gives a f—?,” she bluntly stated. “Imagine being six years old and your biggest Halloween problem is your mother,” Cassidy added.

TikTok Wanted Everyone Dressed As Elsa

The internet couldn’t believe the audacity that the Texas class mom had in the group chat, and didn’t hesitate to share their thoughts on the matter. “Cassidy is a vibe,” one person declared.

“My petty self would get all the girl moms to dress their girls as Elsa,” said another. “This is why I am not friends with people lol,” a third comment read. “My twin boys probably don’t even go to school there but I’m about to transfer them and dress them as Elsa too,” a fourth person joked.

What Is A Class Mom?

A class mom, also called a room mom, room parent, or class parent, is a parent who volunteers their time to be a direct line of communication and organization between the classroom teacher and the families of the students, per The Everymom.

Often duties include reminders about parties, field trips, papers that need to be returned, activities going on at school, projects, gifts for the teacher, and more (via Cheddar Up.)

The person holding the title volunteers their time, and is usually the most busy around the holidays, the beginning of school, the first week of school, and during any party dates. The role has traditionally been called “class mom” or “room mom,” but can be open to all parents, including fathers or guardians regardless of gender.

Is Drama Surrounding Room Parents Common?

It seems that the Texas mother’s drama with her child’s classroom parent wasn’t the first time something like this has happened. Others have spoken out about it on social media.

One mother even made a video asking if there was a toxic culture surrounding the room mom title at private schools.

Other mothers weighed in, some revealing that their experiences with room mothers in private school weren’t not the best. “I just stayed away,” one person said. “Some of them are out of control,” another agreed.

Ultimately, Halloween is supposed to be about letting kids have fun, dress up as their favorite characters, and enjoy a little bit of spooky-season magic. Whether that means one Elsa shows up to the class party or an entire room full of them, it shouldn’t be a source of stress for parents or children. And judging by the reaction to the Texas mom’s group chat, plenty of people agree that some things just aren’t worth turning into a competition.
